December has been an extremely busy month for us here at Serendipitys! Little babies moving into their new room, beginning to renovate Big Babies, Toddlers practicing their Christmas singing and PreSchool performing their nativity, the children have been coping so well with the changes and all of us here as practitioners are immensely proud of what they’re achieving under the current circumstances. We’ve been baking in the Toddler Room again! Today its been orange flavored stain glass Christmas tree star biscuits. Using a grater for the rind of the orange was good for their fine motor skills and for some children it was a kitchen object that they’ve never seen or used before, so it was exciting and provided them with achievement when they were able to use it to remove the orange skin. We reminded the Toddlers that graters can be very sharp, so it was important for us to take our time whilst getting the rind. The firmness of the fruit supported the children in getting a strong grip, so they’ve grasp a better understanding of their own safety, being mindful of their knuckles, but still applying enough pressure to collect the zest. ... We are extremely excited to announce that we have completed furnishing our little baby room! Continuing with our practice of loose parts, this new room will allow the babies to inquire resources at their own pace meanwhile engaging all of their individual senses into items that interest and attract them. Our carpeted area will allow babies who are either crawling, rolling and shuffling to do so comfortably and, because it’s open plan, the babies can analyse the room easily to move between activities which are all accessible. Our messy play will be on the non slip hard floor, and with this room having it’s own shower head, babies can get even messier than ever! ... See more

The children have been giving Mr Cone a haircut in the garden! Using scissors helps preschoolers to track with their eyes, anticipating where the the blades will slice by observing the direction in which the tip is pointing. Running back and forth in the garden and following the instructions of the adults kept them warm in this cold weather, as well as doing some lovely singing and drinking hot chocolate! ... See more

Elaine has worked for Serendipitys for nearly 8 years! She has been the key worker to numerous children in that time and has had huge impacts on their individual development. She is the Nurserys language lead and daily, she does a listening and attention group. In these small sessions she helps to build childrens confidence in speaking as well as aiding their communication skills, extending their vocabulary and building on their concentration! ... See more

The children have taken Peggy the Peg on a adventure! By helping to tie simple knots to keep the buckets on the ribbon, they then pulled the bucket up and poured Peggy out in to the other bucket. Open ended play equipment like rope and buckets into pulleys is excellent for preschoolers creativity. This extremely simple activity with basic materials shows how inventive children can become. ... The toddlers have been practicing our positioning, by putting decorations onto our sign in tree! During this activity, we’ve been talking about our trees at home. We spoke about the height of the trees we have, where in the house they are and what objects we can use to decorate them! As we begin to decorate our Christmas trees at Nursery, could we ask if parents could email us some photographs of the trees in their homes. We hope to print and laminate these and can talk about the similarities and differences during grouptime! ... See more

Today we saw the first few flakes of snow! Even though it was wet and drizzly, the baby room enjoyed playing in the “Snow” and what a huge mess they made! Making snow angels is good for body coordination, moving separate limbs in alternating movements and not to mention its an excellent, fun form of physical fitness! ... See more

Imagination is very important for children, even more so during the festive season! The preschool garden has been visited by the Christmas Fairy, who has left some snowflakes for the children to find! Searching for objects is a fun way for children to interact with others and even begin to make discoveries on their own, the best part being that it can take place anywhere, such as a shop or even in our front room! Because of how adaptable scavenger hunts are, they greatly increase the pre-schoolers observation skills.

As we enter the month of December, we begin to prepare for Christmas! The toddlers have been playing with food this week, and so have had a Christmas Dinner tough spot, talking about the vegetables we enjoy eating and which ones are easiest to chop. We have been pouring “Gravy” onto our dinners too and have been rolling sage and onion stuffing playdough into balls and putting them onto trays ready to be baked! ... See more
